The Belfry Stage is an affordable intimate, 40-seat theater rental venue located in North Hollywood, CA. Located in the southern end of the Arts District, this well-equipped black box is one of the best NoHo theater rental spaces available. los angeles theatre rental, north hollywood theatre rental, Facility, Theatrical Producers League of Los Angeles, Renting Producers Question Guide

Welcome to Part Two of our Frequently Asked Questions! Our friends at the Theatrical Producers League of Los Angeles, a trade association of Los Angeles theatre producers, wrote an excellent Renting Producers Question Guide for Venues. It’s a handy FAQ for Renters; a document that all producers in need of a venue should bring with them on a tour. It reminds you of the questions you know you need to ask, and gives you a few questions to which you never knew you needed the answers to. We took the Question Guide and posted our answers here for your convenience. Take a look!

In Part One, we answered questions about Payments, Fines, Insurance, and Safety. Here in Part Two, we’re answering specific questions about the features of our Los Angeles theatre rental facility, studio/stage, and our North Hollywood theatre rental facility, The Belfry Stage.

Do you have a ground plan with stage dimensions?

Yes, as a matter of fact, we do! Actually, we have 3-dimensional renderings of both our Los Angeles theatre rental facility, studio/stage (Download Here) and our North Hollywood theatre rental facility, The Belfry Stage (Download Here) in SketchUp format. Download SketchUp Viewer here.

Is there a standard plot in the air that we can use or augment?

Yes, both studio/stage and The Belfry Stage come fully equipped with default repertory light plots hanging in the air. Modify them as you see fit, but please restore the grid to its default state as a part of your strike, post-production.

Is the air conditioner in good, working condition? How old is the unit? When was it last serviced?

The comfort of our audiences and artists is a priority and a Theatrical Producers League standard.

studio/stage, our Los Angeles theatre rental facility, comes equipped with an excellent central air system that either cools or heats the space to your desired temperature within minutes. We installed a new motor into the unit in May 2017, and it runs flawlessly.

Back in 2016 at The Belfry Stage, our North Hollywood theatre rental facility, we installed two large “box” air conditioners into the stage left walls. They are incredibly powerful, strong enough to cool the space even with a sold-out house.

Is the space handicap accessible?

studio/stage is ADA-compliant and features an ADA-compliant bathroom in the green dressing room.

The Belfry Stage, having been built on the second floor of an 80-plus-year-old church campus, is not wheelchair accessible. All other aspects of this space meet Theatrical Producers League of Los Angeles standards.

Is there a physical box office? If so, do renters have use of it? If there isn’t one or it is not available to renters, what box office setup is permitted for renters?

Neither facility features a traditional Box Office window. However, both spaces have areas suitable for a “pop-up” box office.

At studio/stage, when you first come in, there sits a rolling bar on the left-hand side, typically stationed right next to the door leading into the stage.

At The Belfry Stage, producers station their Box Office at Danny’s Bar, a larger tile-topped bar located in the main lobby.

Are wings and masking flexible? Do you provide curtains/duvetyn for additional masking?

At studio/stage, our Los Angeles theatre rental facility, we have curtains available that can “black box” the entire stage. Typically, producers use the curtains to create wings stage left and stage right, but leave upstage open so lighting designers can make maximum use of the cyclorama. Productions can use as much or as little of the masking as they like.

At The Belfry Stage, our North Hollywood theatre rental facility, we do not provide curtains. Renters can bring in their own to hang from the grid however they see fit, as long as it doesn’t create a fire hazard.

What is stage floor made of and can it be used to anchor into?

At studio/stage, the stage is made of 3’x8’x6″ platforms with plywood tops. Designers can anchor into the surface as long as any holes they create are repaired afterward. Also, renters can paint the floor for their productions, as long as it is restored to its default matte black at the completion of the rental.

The Belfry Stage‘s floor is masonite on top of a layer of plywood, and productions are welcome to both paint and anchor into this surface as well, as long as the space is restored to its default at the end of the rental period.

Has the theatre been sound-proofed?

studio/stage, our Los Angeles theatre rental facility, features good-quality soundproofing in the walls. However, the ceiling’s soundproofing is not perfect, thanks to the hanging points for the light grid and truss.

When the windows and doors to our North Hollywood theatre rental facility are closed, the space is protected from outside sound. However, that sound-proofing seal to The Belfry Stage is not perfect.

What kinds of noise from outside the theatre is audible inside?

At studio/stage, our Los Angeles theatre rental facility, only noise from the loudest vehicles, such as fire trucks or ambulances, bleed through the walls to the theatre. Occasionally, you can hear footsteps from the art studio space above the stage. However, as the space upstairs isn’t usually occupied during performance hours, that sound bleed is typically a non-issue.

The Belfry Stage, our North Hollywood theatre rental facility, sits above a courtyard. Occasionally voices from the courtyard bleed through the walls, especially if the doors or windows to the space are cracked open. This is a problem only if a production downstairs at Crown City has their intermission or ends while the performance upstairs is still running. However, the team at Crown City encourages their audience to stay in the main stage space downstairs during intermission. They also instruct their audience to please be mindful of the performance upstairs as they leave after the show.

Is there a refrigerator and microwave accessible?

Yes, both our Los Angeles theatre rental facility, studio/stage, and our North Hollywood theatre rental facility, The Belfry Stage have a refrigerator and microwave. Renters may use them for food props, concessions, and hospitality, and/or cast and crew food.

We do require that all food stored in the refrigerator has a label with a name and date written clearly on it (there are labels and markers provided nearby). Each Monday, any food stored in the refrigerator that doesn’t have a label will be discarded.

That’s it for Part 2: Facility Questions! We know there are lots of questions about Los Angeles theatre rental. We hope you find these answers in our FAQ for Renters helpful as you research spaces. Of course, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us and ask!

Thank you again to our friends at the Theatrical Producers League of Los Angeles for this outstanding guide. Stay tuned for Part 3 of our Renting Producers Question Guide for Venues coming soon.
